Today: 1) Class will read “Make the Connection” on pg. 580.  What do you predict Jonathan Swift’s proposal will be?

2) Class will examine the three persuasive techniques used in Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” on pg. 580. 

3) Class will begin reading “A Modest Proposal” on pp. 583-589, finding examples of each of the three persuasive techniques used by Swift.

4) Class will complete the yellow reading check questions #1-7 on pp. 583-585.

Do-Now: Does Macbeth’s story remind you of another story you’ve heard or a movie you’ve seen?  Is there anyone in history who has led a similar life to Macbeth?  Are there any fictional characters whom resemble Macbeth (either from books, movies, or plays?)  Explain.

Today: 1) Class will read “Soliloquies and Asides” on pg. 521, discussing how Macbeth’s decline can be seen from these speeches.

2) In groups, students will be assigned one of Macbeth’s soliloquies to revisit.  Each group will re-read the soliloquy and re-write it in modern language, while still staying true to its meaning.

3) Each group will present their modernized version of Macbeth’s soliloquy to the class.  Soliloquies will be presented in the order they were found in the play in order for the class to be able to view Macbeth’s decline.

Do-Now: We know Macbeth will die by the end of the play, but do you feel he deserves death as a punishment for what he’s done?  Was Macbeth a vicious murderer or a helpless victim?  Had it not been for the witches’ prophecy, would Macbeth still be faced with the same cruel fate he faces now?

Today: 1) How is suspense being created in the final scenes?

2) Class will read Act 5, Scenes 4-5.  How do these short scenes create suspense in the play?  How do we see Macbeth continuing to wear down?  How are his chances of winning the battle beginning to diminish?

3) In groups, students will read Act 5, Scenes 6 and 7.  How does Macbeth handle the pressure of battle?   How does suspense continue to build in these short scenes?

4) Class will discuss the scenes in Act 5, leading up to the final scene of the play.  Class will read Act 5, Scene 8 together and discuss how Macbeth’s overconfidence leads to his final demise.  How have the witches managed to outwit Macbeth?  How  are the play’s main conflicts resolved in this final scene?

5) Write a 10-15 sentence response to question #15 on pg. 526.

2) Class will read Act 5, Scene 1 and discuss how Lady Macbeth’s guilt over Duncan’s murder is beginning to manifest itself in her sleepwalking and OCD.

3) In groups, students will read Act 5, Scenes 2 and 3.  How is Macbeth beginning to crumble under the pressure of war?

Do-Now: Macduff has been accused of being a traitor against Macbeth, yet Macbeth is guilty of killing king Duncan.  Who is the real traitor: Macbeth or Macduff?  Explain.  Can both men be considered traitors?  Explain why or why not.

Today: 1) Class will read Act 4, Scene 2.  What do Lady Macduff and her son discuss about Macduff's disappearance?  How is Macduff viewed as a traitor in more ways than one?

2) Class will begin reading Act 4, Scene 3 focusing on the test of loyalty Malcolm gives to Macduff.  Why is this test necessary based on what has happened thus far in the play?

3) In groups, students will finish reading Act 4, Scene 3.  What are Malcolm and Macduff’s plans for defeating Macbeth?  Are their plans against Macbeth an act of treason?

Do-Now: Macbeth plans on returning to the witches in order to learn more about his future.  Based on what has happened as a result of the witches’ first prediction, do you believe this is a good idea?  What might the witches tell Macbeth?  How might knowing more about his future influence him?  What might this knowledge cause him to do?

Today: 1) Complete Grammar Link on Pg. 1078.

2) Complete questions  8, 9,  and 12 on pg. 489.

3) Class will begin reading Act 4, Scene 1, focusing on the witches newest predictions for the class.  Students will fill out a chart recording each of the three apparitions given to Macbeth.  They will then describe Macbeth’s response to each apparition, followed by a prediction of what they feel Macbeth might do based on the knowledge from each apparition.

Do-Now: Do you consider yourself to be someone who has a guilty conscience?  That is, do you feel bad when you’ve done something wrong or do you dismiss any remorse you may have for what you’ve done?  Has your guilty conscience ever made you confess to something wrong that you did?  Has anyone with a guilty conscience ever confessed to you?

Today: 1) Review figurative language: similes and metaphors

2) Class will read begin reading Act 3, Scene 4 looking for examples of simile and metaphor and discussing what each one means.

3) In groups, students will finish reading Act. 3, Scene 4.  What is the significance of Banquo’s ghost returning to see Macbeth?  Is the ghost real or simply a product of Macbeth’s imagination and guilty conscience?

Do-Now: Now that Duncan has been killed, how will Macbeth get away with murder?  What do you think he will do in order to free himself from suspicion?  Who will he blame for the murder?  Who else might have a motive for killing Duncan?

Today: 1) Class will begin reading Act 2, Scene 3 of Macbeth.  How is the Porter used as a comic relief for the play?  Where have we seen comic characters in Shakespeare’s other tragedies?

2) Students will finish reading Act 2, Scene 3 in groups, examining how Macbeth and Lady Macbeth overact in order to cover up the fact they have just committed murder.  Students will cite actions/dialogue which show Macbeth/Lady Macbeth overdramatizing.

2) Extra-Credit: Re-write part of "Beowulf" from the point-of-view of Grendel's mother.  Your story should include details from the original text as well as details you create on your own.  In your story, explain how you felt about your son's death and why you sought revenge.  Also, describe your fight with Beowulf and your final thoughts as you were dying.  Your story should be at least 20 complete sentences and will be worth 20 extra-credit points.
