2) Class will begin reading “Games at Twilight,” focusing on the images used in the story’s setting to help create the story’s mood.

3) Complete Questions # 3, 6, 7, 8 on pg. 1296.

Objective: SWBAT identify the sources of a character’s conflict.  SWBAT find and describe an instance of situational irony.

Do-Now: Complete the Quickwrite on pg. 1282.

Today: 1) Teacher will review conflict and situational irony.  Preview vocabulary on pg. 1282 and 1241.

2) Class will read “Like the Sun,” focusing on the sources of the main character’s conflict.

3) In groups, students will identify the instance of situational irony found in the story as well as the story’s theme.  Each group will write their theme on an index cards and the cards will be read to the class.  The class will then vote on which is the best theme.

4) Complete Extending & Evaluating Question #12.

2) Teacher and class will discuss the culture clashes seen in the two stories that were read this week.  Class will read “Points of View” on pg. 1134.

3) Class will read “I Believe in the British Empire” pg. 1135, identifying the author’s main arguments and completing Yellow Block questions 1-6.

4) In groups, students will read “The Noble Mansion of Free India” pg. 1137, identifying the author’s main arguments and completing the yellow block question.

5) Students will choose a topic from the “Thinking Critically” section to write a brief essay on.

3) In groups, students will finish reading “B. Wordsworth,” focusing on the dialogue between the man and the boy.


4) Response & Analysis #6, 7, 9 on pg. 1239 and Response & Analysis #6, 8, 9 on pg. 1146.


Exit Slip: How might this story have been different if it had been told from B. Wordsworth’s point of view instead of the boy’s?  What would have been lost?  What would have been gained?
