Wednesday, January 18

Objective: SWBAT examine two separate views of colonialism and describe each author’s main arguments.

Do-Now: Do you believe there are certain cultural differences that cannot be bridged?  Or do you believe that with patience and understanding, different cultures may be able to get along?

Today: 1) Go over questions from "Telephone Conversation"

2) Teacher and class will discuss the culture clashes seen in the two stories that were read this week.  Class will read “Points of View” on pg. 1134.

3) Class will read “I Believe in the British Empire” pg. 1135, identifying the author’s main arguments and completing Yellow Block questions 1-6.

4) In groups, students will read “The Noble Mansion of Free India” pg. 1137, identifying the author’s main arguments and completing the yellow block question.

5) Students will choose a topic from the “Thinking Critically” section to write a brief essay on.

Exit Slip: Based on the four pieces we have read "Shooting an Elephant," "No Witchcraft For Sale," "I Believe in the British Empire," and "The Noble Mansion of Free India," describe your views on colonialism.  What is it and how did it affect the people involved?

Homework: Finish “Thinking Critically” essay
